It’s the first week of December! Typically that would mean another episode in the DIY Decor series. But, this week I wanted to help out anyone who might be experiencing some holiday overwhelm. From Thanksgiving to Christmas, and all the birthdays we personally celebrate in between, I know how stressful it can feel to tackle it all. (Especially the gift side of things.) But it’s possible! And I’m here to help you accomplish just that!
From homemade gifts to gifts that give back, there’s plenty of options to choose from! Now, it’s only a matter of figuring out what each of your loved ones would be most grateful to receive. Some love handmade gifts, no matter how they turn out or how much they cost to make. Others prefer sentimental gifts in other ways – whether it be donating to a charity in their honor or memories to be made on an adventure together.
No matter your budget or your skill level, I know you can get your loved ones gifts they’ll brag about and remember for the rest of their lives! And in case you think you might need a little help, I’m here for you! So get comfy, grab something to write notes down on, and let’s get to it!
Homemade/Handmade Gift
When it comes to gifts made with love, it’s always going to be a winning choice! In fact, making gifts for my loved ones is one of my favorite things to do. Not only will they be able to look at it and reminisce, but handmade gifts last a lifetime! The only tricky parts are: finding out what type of art you’re best at making, and what ‘things’ your loved ones are into. But don’t overthink it! The options are almost endless.
First, figure out what type of art you want to make or are good at already. Typically, this speaks to you, and it can be different things. I’ve made paintings, macrame, picture frames, wooden animals – all sorts of things! I didn’t think I was good at any of it either, until I started doing it. Then I realized how much fun I was having while doing it, which is a win-win! Whether it’s as simple as a goody sweet baskets or personalized card, there’s no wrong way to do it.
And of course, you can always order a personalized gift from a shop like Etsy or PersonalizationMall. There’s nothing wrong with that! I’ve even ordered an explosion photo box and personalized the inner workings to make it just as personal as if I were to assemble the whole thing! Do Good, Feel Good Gift
Every day of the year is a good day to make a difference in someone’s life. But the holidays can be a hard time for those who may not have the resources. All over the world, there’s families struggling to eat, keep a roof over their heads, and are even fighting life-threatening battles. So this time of the year is a great time to honor and even help those who may need it most! Whether it be through donating new or used items, giving to charity, etc.
What does this have to do with getting your loved ones a special gift? Well, like I said earlier, perhaps someone would love the gift of a donation to charity in their honor. But there’s other ways too! You can look for companies that give back in a variety of manners. Shameless plug, but ETM has items that give a meal to a child in need, donate to preserving wildlife, and even gives to families experiencing hard times.
And that’s all from simply buying an item that your loved ones may already need! Another win-win if you ask me! But it doesn’t end there. There’s so many companies that are thankfully switching to this initiative and finding ways to give back where they can. BareMinerals has their site set up to allow you to cast a vote for where you want your difference to be made when you make a purchase. A gift for your loved ones can equal a better life for someone, somewhere else! And that may even be an extra gift for your loved one just to hear that!
Memorable Gift
I know it may sound counterintuitive, but another great type of gift is one to be shared with other loved ones. Hear me out. What’s better than spending time and making memories with the ones we love? I don’t know what your answer would be, but mine is nothing! I’ve been made very aware in life that our time with loved ones is finite. There will eventually be a time where I will no longer have them with me. So I want to be able to make every memory I can with them while they’re here!
Family adventures weren’t a big thing for me growing up. Our time in Yosemite is still etched in my head though almost 20 years later. Time spent traveling to extended families’ homes were even highlights for me. But to be honest, with my Dad gone I truly wish we had more. And it’s one of the major things I intend to do now that I’m older and am able to! There’s no substitute for looking at a photo and it sparking a conversation that was had with a loved one. Especially when another one can no longer be had.
And if you’re the type of person that this gift idea resonates with, then I’ve got some good news for you! I am now working as a travel advisor with Our Whole Village – an agency that truly understands that time (and memories) with loved ones is limited, so why not take advantage of it now?! Here’s the deal though – I’m not the typical travel agent. It’s not just a book it and forget it ordeal. I make sure you have the absolute best time from start to finish! Recommendations, reservations, and so many other aspects that make travel a hassle are taken care of so you can focus on making memories! Whatever You Do, Do It With Love
No matter what gift you decide to give, know that your loved ones will be grateful no matter what. It really is the thought that counts. Whether homemade or bought, and no matter what your budget, the spirit of the holidays is about showing our loved ones how much we appreciate them (although we should be doing that every day of the year!) So whatever you do, do it with love!
If you have any fun gift ideas, drop them in the comments below! You never know, you could be the inspiration someone needs to get started! And as always, thank you so very much for being a part of ETM’s community! I encourage you to join discussions, interact with Mommas and others alike, and be unapologetically yourself! Until next time, I hope I’m able to help make your life as simple as could be. (:
