(Ep. 2 – STYLISH TOUCHES)
When it comes to sprucing up the home, most of us look for things that are easy, practical, and affordable. Even when it comes to DIY projects. But the cool thing about DIY projects is there’s always a way to add your own personal touch! And with fun ways to mix it up in the kid’s room, the living room, or wherever, your whole home could end up having an affordable interior designer – you!
It’s officially the first week of June! And as promised, I’ve got another fun and creative way to decorate your Little One’s space (or any space for that matter!) Not to mention, easy and affordable too! This second episode of the series will focus on stylish touches because it’s a great way for anybody to make a change in their home. Even without actually being good at interior design!
Like I said, your own personal touch is what makes it really special! Plus, it’s a great way to keep everything looking cohesive and purposeful! And the reason I want to talk about it in this second episode is to get you comfortable with your own final products without overly scrutinizing the things you create. The little things here and there that you might not be able to stand at first really just add character and make things unique!
So let’s get into 3 easy ways anyone can add their own stylish touches to their space! And click the photo to watch the video or keep reading and get inspired to make your own changes around the home!
Not Perfectly Done But Perfect For Me
One of the earliest home decor items I took interest in was blankets. Even now, my husband and I had to build a blanket ladder to contain all the comfort piling up in our home. But growing up, the blankets that my grandma taught me to make were my favorite way of adding my own stylish touches to my space. And it’s a process even a 10 year old can follow! It only requires 2 pieces of fabric (of choice) measured out to choice size, and some scissors.
Yup. That’s really it. Take the pieces of fabric and make cuts along each edge about 1.5-2 inches deep and about 1 inch apart. Once all 4 sides are cut, simply tie the strands from one piece of fabric to the other. Repeat until it creates a double-sided blanket like the one pictured below! Voila, an easy, cheap, and adorable way to add style to any room in the home!
The More, The Merrier
Isn’t it the best when you can find ways to give new life to old items? I think so! And one of the funnest ways I’ve done this is turning old dogs toys into cute and stylish pillows. (Although you could just as easily buy some stuffing material and use that instead.) And it’s a great addition for any space in the home, especially Little One’s! It only requires 2 pieces of fabric (of choice) measured out to choice size, some stuffing material, and a needle and thread. I used a handheld sewing machine.
Simply sew the pieces of fabric together along 3 of the edges so you have a closed shaped with an opening at the top. Fill it with as much (or as little) stuffing as you want, and sew the top shut. Voila, an easy, cheap, and adorable way to add style (and comfort) to any room in the home! You can also sew an extra piece of fabric on the front, only along 3 edges, and leaving some room between the pillow and the added piece like the one pictured below. *Make sure to do this part first before even starting the pillow making process or else you’ll have to start over like I did. And boom! An added pocket for Little One’s favorite stuffed toy, anyone?
Make It Uniquely Yours
Ever have anything that served its purpose but could do a bit more to add to the aesthetics of your space? Have you ever had an experience where you wanted to buy something to decorate your space but simply couldn’t justify the cost? You’re in luck! Enter pom poms. The cheapest, easiest, and most adorable way to add character to anything in your home! It only requires some yarn, scissors, and hot glue. (Plus whatever item you are wanting to make unique and give character.)
Got some storage bins or baskets? Great! Simply make a pom pom by wrapping yarn around your fingers or a fork as many times as you want. (The more wraps, the larger the pom pom.) Then tie another piece of yarn around the center of the wrapping to create a sort of bow-looking shape. From there, cut the two sides of the “bow” and voila, you have a pom pom! *Process pictured below. Use more yarn or hot glue to attach the pom pom to the storage bins or baskets and you’ll have a stylish and unique storage solution!
What Is Your Home Waiting For?
There really is no right or wrong way to start here, so what are you waiting for? Like I said, I’ve been making those double-sided blankets since I was about 10 years old, so I know you can do it! Plus, what Little One wouldn’t love being able to personally tuck their favorite toy in for the night? And pom poms aren’t only restricted to storage bins and baskets! You can make personalized mobiles, rugs, and lots of other fun and unique stuff to spruce up your space. So give it a go! If you try any of these ideas, don’t forget to share them on social and tag me so I can see your style! Plus, check out ETM’s last blog in this series for photo and artwork ideas here.
